Acrylic painting - Part1

HELLO EVERYONE,

So for my blog project I've decided to attempt to paint. See how I said attempt. My grandmother is really good at painting so I always try when I go to her house. Which doesn't go down too well, because I don't know what I'm doing. It's something I would like to get better at so my blog is going to be mostly going over the basics. So far the book has been more helpful with techniques but I haven't improved all that much. So without further ado, what I've learned on applying the paint.

“Their effect is very much dependent upon their application. For example, if you apply it thinly then the effect will be different and if you apply it thickly then that will also result in a very different effect.” (152, Montgomery)  This quote comes straight from the book and its talking about the thickness of the paint. Before I hadn't given much thought to what would happened if I were to apply the paint thinly vs if I has just coated the board.  I created a small piece to show the difference between the two techniques.

“The greatness of these paints is that you can get two completely different feels with just using different techniques to the same paint. This can create depth and much more artistic ideas. A lot of painters use a mix of both to create a variety of color and show texture."(153, Montgomery)  To try out this idea I used both techniques to show the difference. Using the highest thickness possibly and one of the thinness.  Below I have a photo of the painting from the side so you can see the difference in texture. For the heavier side I just scooped the paint and dabbed it on, not much mixing or blending. On the lighter side I wiped most the paint off on a separate sheet before added the thin coat.

Now that you've seen how easily someone can change the texture of a painting, just by changing the amount of paint. Do you think this same way of thinking applies in other aspects of life? That if you were to give less or more a completely different outcome could appear?

  1. I like how your question relates to a topic something else about painting when you said "applies in other aspects of life". I didn't know that the thickness of paint that is applied could effect the texture of the image itself. I am a terrible painter but I find painting fun and interesting so the next time I paint, I'll try the techniques that you showed here.

    1. Thank you! I didn't either and it was a really cool experience. I hope this helps you in a later time, have fun painting!

  2. This is actually surprisingly deep. Like when you try to spread the paint to thin you don't get a lot of color, like when you spread yourself too thin by doing too much so you get nothing good out of yourself. I think this is all so cool and I may use this technique if I ever decide to paint.
